I have continued to read the book,
The Strangers by Albert Camus and the farther I get in to the book it gets a little more detail. Overall its still getting a little better as we go along. The funeral is in a town called
Algiers about eighty kilometers from
Marengo where the child lives. The still doesn't want to see his Maman before her casket is sealed and she is buried. The residents at the place where she lived are only allowed to attend the vigil of someone whose passed and not the funeral. So there were only 4-5 people in total outside the workers that attended the funeral, including Perez, who was teased saying he had a finacee which would have been Maman.
I fear that this child will eventually regret not seeing his maman for one last time, it could shape the book on how he never got closure and the chance to say goodbye.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds very good. That is really sad that he doesn't want to see his mother before she is buried. I guess I would not want to remember my mother cold, white, and dead. Happy memories are better than sad memories of a person. The memories you want to keep are not the images of a person before they are buried. I know this from personal experience.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of "Things Fall Apart" the main character Okwonkwo carried the guilt of his father for the rest of his life. His father was a lazy man who contracted a disease that made it so they couldn't bury him. As a result Okonkwo never felt he was free of his father's shadow. I have a feeling that this may occur with this character.
ReplyDeleteStoriesfromtheMindandHeart, "Things Fall Apart" is one of my favorite novels. This novel is quite different, though. It examines the question: What if we really just didn't care that much about life?" Interesting and disturbing as one watches this character.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of "Things Fall Apart" though if it seems similar to this it may be kind of interesting. If we didn't really care much about life then whats the point of us being born in the first place. You have to enjoy every minute of it because if you don't, then its just boring and you would most likely regret it all.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Autumn. To me, life is all about the connections we make with people. For me, these connections are what give life its meaning. Yes, sometimes a connection can be severed and that is painful, but I'd rather feel pain than feel nothing, I think. In Things Fall Apart, there is a great connection between the people. They just connect in a different way than traditional Western culture does, so they don't understand it. At least, I think that's what it was about; I read it 10 years ago...I need to go back and read it again. A great book is always worth a secone read.
